Why Are Your Indoor Plant Leaves Turning Yellow? 7 Causes and Fixes

Quick answer: The most common cause of yellow leaves on indoor plants is overwatering with poor drainage. Other causes are underwatering, too little or too much light, a nutrient shortage, pests, a crowded root ball, and normal ageing of the lowest leaves. Check the soil moisture two inches down and the pot's drainage holes first.

A yellow leaf is your plant's way of saying something is off, but it rarely means the plant is doomed. The trick is to read the pattern. Here are the seven usual causes and how to fix each one.

1. Overwatering and Poor Drainage

Signs: several leaves turn yellow, often lower ones first; soil stays wet for days; stems feel soft; a sour smell may come from the pot.

Fix: stop watering until the top two inches are dry. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and never leaves the plant standing in water in the saucer. If roots are brown and mushy, trim them and repot in fresh, airy mix. Our potting mix guide shows how to build one.

2. Underwatering

Signs: leaves turn yellow then crisp and brown; soil is pulling away from the pot; the pot feels very light.

Fix: water slowly until it drains from the bottom. If water runs straight through, soak the pot in a bucket of water for 15 to 20 minutes, then drain.

3. Too Little Light

Signs: pale yellow-green leaves, long gaps between leaves, slow growth, lower leaves dropping.

Fix: move the plant closer to a bright window with indirect light. Choose plants that suit your room; see our guide to the best indoor plants for Indian homes.

4. Too Much Direct Sun

Signs: yellow or bleached patches that turn brown and dry, usually on the side facing the window.

Fix: move the plant back from hot afternoon sun, or filter it with a sheer curtain.

5. Nutrient Shortage

Signs: overall pale or yellowing leaves on a plant that has lived in the same soil for a year or more, with slow growth.

Fix: refresh the top inch of soil with compost or vermicompost, or feed lightly in the growing season. See our 3 liquid plant boosters for easy home options. Do not feed a plant that is already stressed by wet roots; fix watering first.

6. Pests

Signs: yellow speckles, sticky residue, tiny webs, white cottony spots or tiny insects under the leaves.

Fix: isolate the plant, wipe leaves with a damp cloth, and spray a diluted neem solution every few days for two weeks. Our neem oil spray guide has the steps.

7. Root-Bound or Natural Ageing

Signs: roots circle the pot or poke from the drainage hole; or a single old, lowest leaf yellows while the rest of the plant looks healthy.

Fix: an occasional old leaf turning yellow is normal; just pull it off. If the plant is root-bound, move it to a pot one size larger.

Plant-Specific Notes

For snake plants, yellowing with a soft base nearly always means rot; read our snake plant care guide. For money plant, see water vs soil care. Frequently Asked Questions

Should I cut off yellow leaves? Yes. A fully yellow leaf will not turn green again, and removing it lets the plant put energy into new growth.

Why do the lower leaves turn yellow first? It is often normal ageing, but if many lower leaves yellow together, suspect overwatering.

Can a yellow plant recover? Usually yes, once you fix the cause. New growth should come in healthy.

How often should I water an indoor plant? Check the soil first and water only when the top inch or two is dry.
